MINI-DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT FREDDIE

ABOUT ME

My name is Freddie J. Harris and I am a self-taught artist.  I was born in 1962 on the east side of Detroit. Even as a child, all I have ever known is poverty, hunger, depression, fear, and illness. But there has been one light throughout my life - art.

I have spent 25 years homeless on the streets of Detroit. Maybe on one of those days, during one of those years - you passed me by. If you spared me your change, I spent it on the poor man's art supplies: ballpoint pens and spiral notebooks.

In 2008, I overcame my fears, sought help through the Go-Getters Program with Southwest Solutions, and received housing support. Though I am not homeless today, everyday is a battle within myself. My hope is: art wins.

Art has saved my life. And now I'm ready to share my art with you.

IN MEMORIAM

On January 14, 2014 at the age of 51, Freddie J. Harris unexpectedly passed away at his place at the Whitdel Apartments. He was days away from receiving a Rising Phoenix Award, which recognizes individuals who have persevered through extraordinary adversity to accomplish exceptional things. Certainly, Freddie exemplified this kind of journey. It is sad that his journey here has come to an end, so abruptly, and much too soon.

The night he passed, Freddie had been sitting where he was most comfortable - on the milk crates in his kitchen where he drew. A good friend of Freddie's shared these thoughts: "Freddie lived for his art and his desire to perfect his art. He was determined to create something beautiful and unique, often under such desolate conditions. Even in his homelessness, he found shelter and meaning in his imagination and intricate work. I have told people that Freddie is the most disciplined and passionate artist I have ever known. He would sacrifice food and his wellbeing for a pen and a notebook - and one last drawing, hoping that it might be perfect, and somehow endure."

Please view the tribute video below, created by filmmaker and friend of Freddie's, Steve Palackdharry, and read Freddie's story here to learn more about his life and his art.

"Even the greatest masterpiece is never complete."

“I'm trying to constantly work to take life step by step through my art.

Trying to gain access to hope through my art."
